How To Install a Processor (CPU)

Installing a new processor is easy however takes more care than any other part in the computer. If anything during the installation goes wrong, the motherboard and/or the processor can become damage and entirely un-usable and un-repairable. Do take care when installing a CPU for the first time.

  1. First power down your computer and un-plug the power cord for safety.
  2. Open your computer case
  3. Remove the Fan and Heat-sink that cool the CPU (now is a good time to clean the heat sink with compressed air if the computer has dust build-up)
  4. Remove the old CPU by (most likely) lifting a bracket to release the chip.
  5. Carefully replace the CPU making sure the notches on the sides of the CPU correctly match up with the notches on the motherboard.
  6. Secure the CPU with the bracket and replace the heat sink and fan.
  7. Re-assemble the computer chassis and power up the computer.
  8. The motherboard BIOS may detect a new processor and require you to save changes or hit a key to proceed.
