Search Engines

Search Engines allow user's to search through everything the internet has to offer and quickly find what they are looking for. These engines are created by collecting massive amounts of data and storing that information into a database. The database can then be readily searched by the user to find what he or she is looking for. The internet's most popular search engine is Google, followed by Baidu, Bing, Yahoo and Excite.

When the internet first started becoming popular, competition to become the most utilized search engine was fierce. This competition only began to cool off when Google was launched and in a manner that only it could, ended the battle.

Some of the more popular search engines that helped to make the internet more usable in the internet's early days include Web Crawler,, Lycos, Infoseek, AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Dogpile, and Ask Jeeves. These sites were readily accessed by users and the top spot for most used search engine was frequently passed back and forth between sites. Many of these sites continue to operate today.
